Trek to one of the most enigmatic and visually spectacular Incan ruins in the Cusco region. Waqrapukara, meaning 'Horned Fortress' in Quechua, is an ancient sanctuary perched precariously on a cliff edge overlooking the dramatic Apurimac River canyon. Far off the traditional tourist circuit, this full-day adventure offers absolute tranquility, stunning canyon landscapes, and a deep sense of mysticism as you explore a site that served as both an astronomical observatory and a defensive fortress. It is a demanding but incredibly rewarding experience for avid hikers.
Day by Day Itinerary
Cusco – Sangarara – Punta Carretera – Waqrapukara
Our adventure begins with a pick-up from your hotel between 4:00 AM and 4:30 AM. We drive south of Cusco for about 2.5 hours to the town of Sangarara, where we stop for a satisfying breakfast. We then continue driving along a bumpy dirt road to 'Punta Carretera' (the trailhead). From here, we begin a relatively flat but long hike through beautiful Andean landscapes, passing small high-altitude lakes and herds of alpacas. After about 2.5 hours of hiking, the massive, horn-shaped rock formation of Waqrapukara suddenly comes into view. We descend slightly to explore the terraces, plazas, and stone enclosures built seamlessly into the cliff face (4,140m). Your guide will explain the fascinating history and myths of this remote fortress. After a boxed lunch with unparalleled canyon views, we hike back out along the same trail and return to Cusco, arriving around 6:30 PM. • Trekking Distance: 15 km / 9.3 miles (round trip) • Estimated Hiking Time: 5 hours • Highest Altitude: 4,300m / 14,107ft (Trailhead/Pass)
