Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain - 1D
Expedition Overview
Discover Palccoyo, the magnificent alternative to Vinicunca. Often referred to as the 'Alternative Rainbow Mountain,' Palccoyo actually offers three distinct rainbow mountains and a fascinating stone forest, all accessible via a much shorter and easier hike. This relatively flat, 45-minute walk is perfect for families, older travelers, or anyone who wants to experience the stunning multicolored mineral formations of the Andes without the intense physical exertion or the massive crowds of the classic route. It is a true hidden gem of the Cusco region.
Day by Day Itinerary
Cusco – Checacupe – Palccoyo Valley
We pick you up from your hotel between 4:30 AM and 5:00 AM. We drive south through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to the town of Checacupe, where you can see three bridges from different eras: Incan, Colonial, and Republican. We continue to a local restaurant for a hearty breakfast. Afterward, we drive up a winding dirt road, passing through traditional alpaca-herding communities, until we reach the Palccoyo trailhead (4,900m). Unlike Vinicunca, the hike here is mostly flat and takes only about 45 minutes. You will be surrounded by three separate rainbow mountains. We also take a short walk to the Stone Forest, a cluster of sharp geological formations offering incredible views of the massive Ausangate glacier. After enjoying the scenery and taking photos without the crowds, we return to our transport, drive back down for a buffet lunch, and arrive in Cusco around 5:30 PM. • Trekking Distance: 3 km / 1.8 miles (round trip) • Estimated Hiking Time: 1.5 hours • Highest Altitude: 4,900m / 16,076ft
